NFT - Nutrient Film Technique

Quick Answer

NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) is a hydroponic growing system where a shallow, continuously flowing stream of nutrient solution passes over plant roots inside specially designed channels. The constant supply of water, nutrients and oxygen encourages rapid, healthy growth while using very little water or growing media.

NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) Hydroponic Systems

Nutrient Film Technique, commonly known as NFT, is one of the most efficient hydroponic growing methods available. Plants are supported in gently sloping channels while a thin film of nutrient solution continuously flows beneath the roots before returning to a central reservoir for recirculation.

Unlike Deep Water Culture or Flood & Drain systems, NFT keeps most of the root mass exposed to oxygen while maintaining constant access to water and nutrients. This makes it particularly popular for leafy greens, herbs, salad crops and fast-growing vegetables.

Our NFT range includes genuine GT Gro-Tank systems suitable for hobby growers, commercial cultivation, schools and research facilities.

Continuous Feeding

Roots receive a constant supply of nutrient solution throughout the day.

Maximum Oxygen

Most of the root system remains exposed to oxygen for healthy root development.

Highly Efficient

Recirculating nutrient solution minimises water and fertiliser waste.

Commercial Ready

Perfect for everything from home growers to commercial hydroponic production.

How NFT Hydroponic Systems Work

NFT systems circulate nutrient solution from a reservoir through growing channels using a small water pump. The channels are installed with a slight slope so a thin film of nutrient solution continuously flows across the bottom before returning to the reservoir.

Plant roots grow into the channel where they absorb water and nutrients directly from the flowing solution. Because only the lower section of the roots touches the nutrient film, the upper roots remain exposed to oxygen, creating an ideal balance between hydration and aeration.

This continuous circulation provides stable growing conditions while using considerably less water than many traditional cultivation methods.

Advantages of NFT Systems

NFT Compared With Other Hydroponic Systems

System Best For Growing Media Water Efficiency
NFT Leafy greens & herbs Minimal Excellent
DWC Large plants Clay pebbles Excellent
Flood & Drain General growing Various Excellent
Drip Systems Coco & soil Various Very Good

What Can You Grow in NFT?

NFT systems excel when growing lettuce, basil, spinach, rocket, pak choi, coriander and other leafy crops. Many growers also use larger GT Gro-Tank systems for strawberries, peppers and smaller fruiting plants.

Because root space inside the channels is limited, NFT is generally less suitable for very large plants that develop extensive root systems unless commercial channels are used.

Choosing the Right NFT System

When selecting an NFT system, consider the number of plants you intend to grow, the available floor space and the size of the crop at harvest. Smaller systems are ideal for propagation and home growers, while larger GT Gro-Tanks are designed for higher production and commercial growing.

Maintaining an NFT System

Keeping channels, reservoirs and pumps clean is essential for reliable operation. Regularly check pH, EC, water temperature and pump performance to ensure plants receive a consistent nutrient supply.

Roots should be inspected periodically to ensure channels remain free flowing and that excessive root growth does not restrict nutrient circulation.

NFT Frequently Asked Questions

What does NFT stand for?

NFT stands for Nutrient Film Technique, a hydroponic growing system that continuously circulates a shallow film of nutrient solution over plant roots.

Is NFT suitable for beginners?

Yes. Modern NFT systems are simple to operate and are an excellent introduction to recirculating hydroponics.

Which crops grow best in NFT?

Leafy greens, herbs, lettuce, basil, spinach, rocket and similar fast-growing crops perform exceptionally well.

Do NFT systems use growing media?

Very little growing media is required. Plants are usually supported using net pots and small starter plugs or cubes.

How often does nutrient solution circulate?

Most NFT systems run continuously while lights are on, providing constant access to water, nutrients and oxygen.

Can NFT systems be used under LED grow lights?

Absolutely. NFT is one of the most common hydroponic systems used with modern full-spectrum LED grow lighting.
